How to Test Total Alkalinity

Total Alkalinity TestHave you ever thought chemistry looked fun, but you didn't want to learn the boring part about compounds, elements and all the chemistry science that goes along with it? That's the great thing about testing your swimming pool water - you get to do the fun stuff - mix liquids and colors and watch them change before your eyes. But you don't have to know all the science - just enough to know too much - ? heh heh..

How to test for Total Alkalinity with the Taylor K-2006

Step 1
Fill your clean comparator tube to the 25ML Mark.

Step 2
Add 2 Drops R-007 (green bottle). Swirl to mix.

Step 3
Add 5 drops $-008. Swirl to mix. Sample should turn green.

Step  4
Add R-009 Drop by drop. Count and swirl to mix after each drop until color changes from green to red. (Dang, this is cool!)

Step 5
Multiply the number of drops you counted in step 4 by 10. Record as Parts Per Million (PPM). This is your Total Alkalinity.

Note: If you suspect your Total Alkalinity is high (Say, over 100), you may use a 10ml sample with 1 drop R-0007, 3 drops R-0008, and multiply the drops by 25 instead of 10. This will save you on chemical agents.
